Inspector Events

The Activate and Deactivate events for the Inspector object are not commonly used. However, the Close event is critical for proper operation of COM Add-ins, especially in regard to when Outlook is removed from memory.

Activate

The Activate event for the Inspector object occurs when the Inspector window becomes the active window in Outlook. The following example makes the built-in Clipboard Command bar visible in the Inspector window if the message class of the CurrentItem is IPM.Note. When the Activate event occurs, you can return the CurrentItem property of the Inspector object to examine the properties of the item.

Close

The Close event occurs when the Inspector object is closed, either through a user action or programmatically. The Close event will always occur after the Deactivate event. The following example uses the Close event to hide the Assistant. As with the Deactivate event, you cannot access the CurrentItem property of the Inspector object during the Close event.

Deactivate

The Deactivate event occurs when the Inspector window ceases to be the active window because of a user action or program code. The same cautions mentioned earlier regarding the Deactivate event of the Explorer window apply to the Inspector window. Do not display user interface elements in the Deactivate event procedure. The following procedure hides the built-in Clipboard Command bar. In the Deactivate event, you cannot use the CurrentItem property to return properties of the item. If you attempt to use the CurrentItem property, Outlook will generate an Object Not Found error.

New Inspector Events in Outlook 2002

Outlook 2002 introduces a series of window events for the Inspector object. These events determine when an Inspector window has been minimized, maximized, moved, or sized. Because the Inspector window events are identical to the Explorer window events, see the section "New Explorer Events in Outlook 2002" beginning for a description of these events.
